Assignment #1: Model a Mad Scientist Invention

DUE. Tues. Sept. 27th

You stumble into a secret laboratory, hidden below the computer lab. Deep in the depths of a crazy scientist’s lab, you uncover the most unusual invention! You frantically race back up the winding staircase and return to the computer lab to model this amazing contraption, to show to the world your discovery.

Model your own version of a “Mad Scientist’s Invention”. It can be a Tequila powered chainsaw, or an a brain washing contraption, basically any crazy invention your brain can think up.

Modeling the Parts 50%

Most of this assignment will involve modeling the parts and pieces to your invention. Making objects have the right shape and form is really important.

Texturing 30 %

You are required, but not limited, to create at least 3 different shaders (you are not required to use image based textures).

Rendering 20%

Your final invention should do a 360 degree spin, just like your coke can assignment.

Execise 1: Modeling & texturing a coke can

Modeling is the first step to any project. You have to first create the objects you are going to use for any video or game projects. I wanted to start you off with a very simply shaped object to help you get yourself familiar with Maya's interface. Follow these videos as best you can to learn the interface and tool sets of Maya. As you have questions or issues, please feel free to email me or reach me on Skype at any time and I will get back to you as fast as I can. With Skype I can even screenshare to show you something right away if I'm available. Otherwise, if you email me the problem I can upload a quick video explaining how to fix your issue or approach a certain aspect you are having an issue with.
